The Respiratory Therapy Program at St. Alexius Medical Center in Bismarck, North Dakota, has a rich history that reflects the evolution of respiratory care and its vital role in healthcare. This program has not only trained countless professionals but has also significantly impacted the community by providing essential services to patients with respiratory issues. In this blog post, we will delve into the origins, development, and lasting influence of our proud program.

The Origins of the Program

St. Alexius Medical Center has been on the forefront of Respiratory Therapy since the profession's origins. In 1946, our medical center received an Iron Lung graciously donated through our community organization, the Bismarck Eagles. In 1958, we were the first hospital in North Dakota to utilize Liquid Oxygen, and the first to have an official Registered Inhalation Therapist. The Inhalation Therapist would go through an eventual name change to Respiratory Therapist.

The changes didn't stop there. The Respiratory Therapy Program at St. Alexius Medical Center was established in 1971, a time when the field of respiratory care was just beginning to gain recognition. As hospitals started to understand the importance of specialized care for patients with respiratory conditions, the need for trained professionals became evident. Dr. Margaret Morgan, one of the hospital's first anesthesiologists, served as Medical Director and advocate for the program.

Initially, the program was small, focusing on basic respiratory care techniques. However, as the demand for respiratory therapists grew, so did the program. The early years were marked by a commitment to providing high-quality education and training, ensuring that graduates were well-prepared to meet the needs of patients.

Growth and Development

Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, the Respiratory Therapy Program at St. Alexius Medical Center expanded its curriculum to include advanced techniques and technologies. This period saw the introduction of new equipment and treatment modalities, which allowed students to gain hands-on experience with the latest advancements in respiratory care.

The program also began to emphasize the importance of research and evidence-based practice. Faculty members encouraged students to engage in research projects, fostering a culture of inquiry and innovation. This focus on research not only enhanced the educational experience but also contributed to the overall advancement of the field.

In 1982, St. Alexius Medical Center formalized a co-sponsorship agreement with its sister institution, the University of Mary. Originally, the University awarded program graduates the Associate of Science degree. In 1991, the University of Mary approved a Bachelor of Science degree entry level curriculum, eliminating the A.S. degree. In 2012, the University of Mary approved a Master of Science entry level curriculum designed for individuals with baccalaureate degrees in other fields. Before the master’s option was implemented the program could only offer a second BS degree to such applicants. In 2017, the University of Mary approved a Bachelor of Science (RRT to BSRT) curriculum designed for individuals with an associate degree in respiratory therapy.

Today, the traditional Bachelors and Masters program continues to educate and serve the needs of students within our classrooms on the St. Alexius campus in partnership with the University of Mary. The degree advancement program is 100% online, with the same high quality education available to students who are currrently Registered Respiratory Therapists with an Associate's Degree.

The impact of the Respiratory Therapy Program extends far beyond the walls of St. Alexius Medical Center. Graduates of the program have gone on to work in various healthcare settings, including hospitals, clinics, and home care agencies, both locally and nationally. Their expertise has been instrumental in improving patient outcomes and enhancing the quality of care for individuals with respiratory conditions.
